Why Get a Pre-Purchase?

The Sight-Unseen & Rebuilt Subaru Survival Guide

Purchasing a used vehicle is an excellent decision for Utah’s active mountain lifestyle. However, because Subarus are highly specialized, symmetrical all-wheel-drive machines, buying one requires more than a simple visual check.

Whether you are browsing local classifieds, purchasing a rebuilt/restored title vehicle, or buying a car sight-unseen from an out-of-state seller, you deserve complete transparency. Our core philosophy is simple: We believe in providing total, uncompromised vehicle condition education so you can make a safe, data-driven decision.

Our Sight-Unseen Acquisition Playbook: How We Evaluate Cars

At Johnson Family Motors, we acquire surplus vehicles nationwide to rebuild, restore, and recondition them. When we evaluate a Subaru sight-unseen, we follow a strict, non-negotiable process before we ever agree to a purchase. You can use our exact in-house playbook to protect yourself when buying online:

1. The Cold-Start Video

  • Check: Request a continuous video from the seller showing the engine starting from a completely cold state, with the hood open, focusing closely on the engine bay and instrument cluster.
  • Why: Cold boxer engines easily reveal piston slap, timing tensioner noise, or bearing wear that disappears once the engine warms up.

2. The Dash Light Verification

  • Check: Verify that all dashboard warning lights (Check Engine, ABS, VDC traction control) illuminate when the key is in the "On" position, and turn off completely after start-up.
  • Why: Unscrupulous sellers sometimes place black tape over warning lights or pull the physical bulbs from the instrument cluster to hide active faults.

3. Fluid Filler Cap Audit

  • Check: Request high-resolution, close-up photos of the underside of the engine oil cap and the inside of the coolant overflow reservoir.
  • Why: A milky, "chocolate milkshake" residue on the oil cap indicates coolant-to-oil mixing, signaling a major head gasket failure.

4. AWD Tire Date & Depth Audit

  • Check: Request close-up photos of all four tire sidewalls (showing the DOT date code) and tread depth measurements.
  • Why: Subarus require all four tires to match within 2/32 of an inch of tread depth. Mismatched tire circumferences bind and overheat the AWD center differential.

Straight Talk on Rebuilt & Restored Title Subarus

Rebuilt or restored title Subarus are popular because they offer excellent value at a significantly lower purchase price. However, because these vehicles were once declared a total loss by insurance companies, you must understand exactly how to separate a safely rebuilt vehicle from a dangerous structural hazard:

1. Frame Rail & Apron Integrity

  • Check: Inspect the front frame rails, radiator support, and inner fender aprons for wrinkling, heating marks, or non-factory welds.
  • Why: If the frame rails are not perfectly straight, the vehicle's structural integrity is compromised, meaning it will not crush safely to protect passengers in a future accident.

2. SRS Airbag Safety Loop

  • Check: Perform an electronic module interrogation to verify that all deployed airbags were replaced with genuine factory units and that the SRS module was reset or replaced.
  • Why: Some rebuilders use cheap electronic resistors to trick the airbag computer into thinking airbags are installed when they are actually empty. This is a severe, life-threatening hazard.

3. Symmetrical AWD Tracking

  • Check: Verify that the front and rear subframes are perfectly aligned and tracking straight.
  • Why: If a severe side-impact or suspension hit bent the subframe, the vehicle will never align correctly, causing rapid tire wear and destroying the AWD differential.

4. Seam Sealer & Rust Protection

  • Check: Check that all replaced body panels have professional, factory-style seam sealer applied and are treated with undercoating.
  • Why: Unsealed metal seams allow road salt and Utah winter moisture to enter, leading to rapid, hidden frame rust that makes the vehicle structurally unsafe in a few seasons.

Our Recommendation: Get an Independent Hands-On Evaluation

While a physical checklist is an excellent first step, nothing replaces putting the vehicle on a professional service lift and connecting advanced electronic diagnostic tooling.

If the used Subaru you are looking to purchase is located in Utah County, we highly recommend bringing it to our trusted service partner, JFM Auto, for a comprehensive Pre-Purchase Evaluation:

  • Complete Under-Car Audit: The vehicle is raised on a service lift to perform a complete testing and evaluation of the subframes, suspension bushings, oil seeps, and Symmetrical AWD health.
  • Electronic Module Interrogation: Advanced scan tools retrieve any hidden, recently cleared, or pending manufacturer fault codes (like the ABS/VDC communication code C0057) that a standard OBD scanner misses.
  • Loom Video Evidence: JFM Auto’s service advisors use specialized video strictly as tools for presenting vehicle conditions, sending you a professional Loom video overview of the entire inspection so you can see the exact condition of the vehicle with your own eyes.
